IC INFORMATION
Characters Name: Jetstream Sam (Real name is Samuel Rodrigues)
Age: No specified canon age, but he looks to be somewhere between late 20s and early 30s, so probably around 28.
Canon: Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance
Canon Point: Before the boss battle with Sam is about to begin, right when he says, “Let’s dance!”
Species: Human
Gender: Male
Orientation: Sam hasn’t shown inclination towards either sex in canon and is more or less concerned with wanting to fight against the very best, thus his orientation is undetermined. Settling down is not a part of his motivation and goals, so he really wouldn’t care who he got stuck with, as long as they don’t try to interrupt his fights.
History: Here!
Appearance: Here!
Personality: From his first appearance where he gives the most smug smirk to Raiden and co. after taking out a few soldiers during Desperado’s ambush, it’s clear that Sam is a man who is carefree and doesn’t have much to hide. Confident and casual, sometimes too much so (as evidenced by how he holds his sword across his shoulder for half of his appearances), he seems to be easily unaffected by most things. A few blood splatters on his cyborg suit? Not a problem for him! He can just brush it off. Someone’s making a big speech about how war is good for a greater cause? Don’t mind him, he’ll just be off to the side yawning, and would only get up if he senses a potential fight. Otherwise, if it isn’t a big deal to him, he sure as heck won’t bat an eyelash at it. And he might even laugh at someone to boot, even in the most inappropriate of situations, like say, joking about a dying co-worker if they cut themselves shaving.
But, don’t let that fool you! Sam is actually quite a skilled fighter and a cunning analyst. On the battlefield, he is able to figure out how his opponents move, the speed, and even their personality in just a few glances (i.e. In his first battle against Raiden, Sam saw that he was restraining himself from his full potential. To quote: “You deny your weapon its purpose! It yearns to bathe in the blood of your enemies...but you hold it back!”). Off the battlefield is no exception either; his analyzing goes as far as knowing that a co-worker would die, which in turn would let him get a chance to fight the protagonist of MGR (and possibly die as a result).
Speaking of which, Sam pretty much loves to fight. He only ever feels alive when he’s up against someone, because to him, it’s as if he’s staring at death in the face. The greater the challenge his opponent will be, the more the likely that Sam will gladly take up his sword to fight against them. Heck, even a couple of lyrics from his theme song state that:
‘There will be bloodshed
It’s the only thing I’ve ever known’
And how too true it is! Sam would go so far as to randomly challenge someone if he thinks they’re good enough. Plus, he also likes to taunt his opponents so that they become reckless with their attacks in the hopes of making the fight more exciting. And, delving even deeper, he can even take it to manipulative levels, such as pointing out to the protagonist of MGR that the cyborgs being killed by him were still people, and that some of them didn’t even have a choice in signing up to become part of a PMC in order to make someone falter, though as Bladewolf points out later on, Sam isn’t usually manipulative, and in one of the codecs, it’s implied that Sam might have done it to see if Raiden would finally accept himself and be brought to his fullest fighting potential. Though, unlike the other members of Desperado, he doesn’t pull any gimmicks. To him, a fight is best settled between only the two people involved, and anything and anyone not involved can stay out of the way.
Tying into that, his motivation has been warped through the years. Though the basis for it had started out as a quest for justice and revenge, he started to feel the disillusion (which is also alluded to in his theme song), and thus changed into a test of skill, yet he still excused it as just him dispensing justice on those who deserved it. Yet, with being told that another criminal organization would spring up from an old one, combined with his defeat against the final boss of his DLC campaign, it proved to him that corruption cannot be destroyed easily, which made him give up on his justice ideal and thus made him lose his original intention of why Sam fights and why he now believes that ideals are something that shouldn’t interfere on the battlefield.
Despite it all, he does actually dispense some wisdom and he’s not completely without morals. As stated earlier, Sam’s ideals may have changed, but he’s not completely sold on just one ideal, nor will he ever stop someone from pursuing the same cause he used to;if he can’t carry out justice, than someone else might have a better chance. In a pre-recorded message, he has stated that Raiden made him doubt everything he’s worked for the past two years, and that he wonders if his boss’s goals may actually be wrong after all.
Speaking of Raiden, his and Sam’s relation with each other obviously isn’t anything good, considering they’re on opposite sides of what’s worth fighting for. Yet, Sam is intrigued by him, since he sees Raiden as a potential worthy opponent to fight against. Not only that, but as the game goes on, it’s clear how much Sam wants to fight Raiden, not only to see him at his full potential, but also because he sees much of his old self in Raiden, and Sam actually encourages him somewhat to come after him- in his own way, of course (i.e. during the 2nd to the last boss fight, Sam sometimes says “That’s the spirit, Jack!”). He even goes as far as not killing the people at Solis base, and that says something for a man who is only in it to fight.
On top of that, Sam doesn’t like to see anyone be forced into a situation and/or a decision that’s not of their own doing, as evidenced during his first encounter with Bladewolf (whom he has a close bond with, and has actually inspired the robot dog to make his own choice and search for freedom); not that he regrets much over it- if he has to fight someone against their own will, then it can’t be helped. But, to him, he’d much rather go up against someone who chooses to, and seeing someone having to taking orders is pitiful and outright stupid, especially if they’re capable of thinking for themselves.
All in all, Sam’s just an easy-going man who knows and has gone through far more, and goes through many ridiculous lengths just to get a good fight.
Abilities: It’s pretty much a given that Sam has mastered “Rodrigues New Shadow School technique (which derives from Brazilian kenjutsu), since he learned it from his father, and he has also learned hand-to-hand combat. All of his abilities are natural, though his cyborg exoskeleton suit increases the stats, which can put him at head-to-head with cyborgs and even some things larger, such as a Metal Gear RAY.
However, he has a red sword called Murasama, which is a high-frequency blade and can only be used by him, as it’s ID-locked. It’s also capable of being shot out like a bullet from the gun-sheath, and sometimes it releases slash-like projectiles.

First Person: [Sam’s no stranger to technology, so the video feed is on in an instant.]
Well, this is an interesting predicament! I’d ask how, but l’m sure all of you have heard the usual many times, so let’s save it. However… [He chuckles as he rubs his chin for a moment.] I am wondering if anyone is up for a test of skill against me. This place seems too peaceful, and wouldn’t it be better to make it lively? Only catch is there be no gimmicks, extra stunts, and anything else. We settle it just as we are, and nothing else.
Of course, if you don’t want to, then fine. I won’t force you. But- [A shake of of his head as he waves a hand dismissively.] it’ll be your loss. Or maybe, some of you have been pampered for too long that you’ve forgotten how to? Heh, wouldn’t be surprised if that’s the case!
Meet me at the park by noon if you’re in. To anyone passing by, you’re free to watch, munch on popcorn, whatever...no audience participation, so you’re out of luck.
[And he shuts it off.]
Third Person: He almost had it- no, he did have it. The moment where conflicting ideals would collide in order to prove which was superior, and the chance to be so close to death...the thing he searched for had finally payed off and he was right about to grab it.
Yet, just like a flash, it was gone. Where he should’ve stood in the dry desert of the Badlands and seen only the endless sky, instead he was sitting on a lawn chair, and was now staring at the fresh green lawn in front of him. The arid wind and the intensifying heat of the desert? Replaced by only the cool, light breeze-- and did he just hear toucan squack in the far distance? His cyborg suit and Murasama were nowhere to be found, and he instead wore only casual clothes and had keys in his hand. His right arm wasn’t changed too much though, as it was now a regular prosthetic. And for the moment, there was only confusion as he took a glance around. Seemed there was a house too. His, maybe? Well, he had the keys in his hand, so it was more than likely. Still, can’t rule out the possibility that it wasn’t.
One would ask if they had died, but Sam sure as hell knew he didn’t. No blade had ever touched him, and in fact, he’ll probably never know how it’ll feel. Heck, he could have gotten angry, but why should he? He was sorely disappointed for sure, but he wasn’t going to waste the day away stewing over losing the fight he desired. That didn’t seem like fun at all.
Eventually, he strode up to the door and upon seeing an envelope, ripped it right off.
“...my home, eh?” Sam muttered after he looked over the contents. His lips curved into a small grin as he started to laugh. “Ahh, now I see! Might as well greet the neighbors right now.”
And thus, the envelope fell to the ground as he headed towards the neighborhood. One way or another, he’ll get the chance to face death head-on again, even if he had to start over.

- Sam’s right arm is cybernetic, since he lost his real arm against the fight with Armstrong.
